NEW PRESIDENT
Thomas Hainsworth
Thomas Hainsworth is Managing Director of A.W. Hainsworth & Sons Ltd. His family have a long association with Bradford Textile Society, Thomas being the 4th member of the family to be president - his Great Uncle Charles Hainsworth was president between the Wars, his Grandfather Reuben Hainsworth was president elect when he died of cancer in the early 60's, his Uncle, John Hainsworth was president in 1973 and my father David Hainsworth president in 1983.
The family has a long tradition in textiles Abimelech Hainsworth started the mill at the bottom of Farsley in 1800 and by 1832 employed half of Farsley - he died in 1836 aged 67 leaving £12000 and his 2/3 share of the mill, 27 cottages and shops part of which is the square which abuts the east side of Farsley Town Street.
In 1882 (The year before the Bradford Textile Society was formed) the Abimelech William Hainsworth, Abimelech's grandson bought Spring Valley Mills where we are today.
A.W. Hainsworth & Sons Ltd was built up supplying heavy woollen cloths and blanket to the military. Wool still plays a major role in the business, but the company has diversified and a wide range of other fibres from wool to aramids. They have 50 looms and weave from width of 1 cm to 4.6m wide and have one of the few remaining fully vertical woollen mills having their our own spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing. Over recent years have consolidated the majority of our production at Spring Valley Mills. They remain committed to UK manufacturing where the majority of the 200 people they employ are based, but they have moved their warp knitting plant from Cleckheaton to Hong Kong in 2001.
Thomas Hainsworth is the seventh generation of the family to run the company. He joined the business in 1992 and has been Managing Director since 2001. He has a Honours degree in Chemical Engineering and a MBA from Leeds University. To find out more about the company visit their web site www.hainsworth.co.uk.

DESIGN
COMPETITION
The Bradford Textile Society derives the greatest pleasure from
the continuing success of it’s Prize Schemes, which have
been the source of encouragement and inspiration to textile students
and practising textile designers, and have helped to stimulate
new developments in textile design and construction, and finishing
and printing techniques. Many members are convinced that this
competition, one of the oldest of its kind, is the most important
event in the annual programme.
The original sponsors, the Society itself and the Wool Record, share
the distinction of having presented special prizes for design achievement
since the Schemes were established in 1923. The Society is also grateful
to individual organisations and companies, whose support and encouragement
has helped the organising committee to increase the total prize money
by a considerable amount over the years. In particular it acknowledges
the generosity of the Clothworkers Foundation, which has awarded a
number of prizes since 1968,
Premiere Vision, the British Wool Textile Export Corporation, the Textile Finishers' Association and Prestigious Textiles Ltd.
