I have recently finished a BA (Hons) degree in art and design, specialising in embroidery and printmaking. The work shown here is my degree show 'Remnants & Threads', in which I have taken inspiration from a former textile mill at Old Lane, Halifax.
The mill which was opened as Old Lane Mill and owned by Ackroyd & Sons was opened in 1827. It was more recently called Canal Finishing Co and was closed in 1996. I have been using the mill as inspiration for my work for two years, recycling tones, patterns and forms which I have found to exist in this decaying and empowering building.
Some research I have found over the past two months shows that the mill was the first fire proof mill in the UK, having stone floors. It was also the first mill in the UK to use jacquard weaving, keeping workers locked in secret rooms. The intention of my work is to transform my findings at the mill and put them into new contexts through embroidery and printmaking. It is also to highlight the fact that the modern British consumer is missing some values of the past, there is hardly anything textile related mass produced in Yorkshire today.
My work is about the value of the handmade item, longevity, quality, uniqueness, skill and craftsmanship. The things I feel are missing to the modern consumer. I hope you enjoy looking at my work and the findings I have made.
